MOTHERING
SUNDAY: The service on
March 19th conducted by Janet Poole, included a thought-provoking
address which highlighted the history of how Mothering Sunday came to be and
closing with food for thought - “21
hilarious things my mother taught me”
which brought smiles and much laughter !
Janet included a hymn from her childhood at Bank Street Chapel,
Bolton and the vesper ‘Glad that I live
am I’ to which her late father Lance Taylor wrote three extra verses which we
sang. During the service everyone received a bunch of daffodils. Our thanks to Janet and to Wilf Farnworth for
playing the organ.
DONATION: The family of Pauline Hill have donated gifts in memory of her to the Chapel. £537.13 has now been placed in the Frank Glover Organ Trust Fund. We are sure Pauline would have welcomed this.
FUNERAL: The funeral service for Bob Mather was held at Chapel on March 9th conducted by Rev Brenda Catherall and including tributes from Bob’s family. The music for reflection was a nostalgic medley of hymns and Sunday School songs which were popular in the 1960’s during the height of the Unitarian Young People’s League. (It was at a UYPL gathering at Great Hucklow that Bob met his future wife Denise). Following the service the committal was held at Howe Bridge Crematorium. Bob was a much loved member of Chowbent Chapel and our thoughts and prayers are with all the family. Bob will long be remembered with love and affection as he rests in God’s peace.
GRANVILLE LEATHER: We were all saddened to hear that Granville Leather had passed away in hospital. He was a long-standing and much-loved member of Bank Street Chapel, Bolton and we at Chowbent remember him also as do all those in the district and beyond for his preaching, support, service and joyful presence. Details of the funeral will be announced and we hold especially in our thoughts and prayers Granville’s wife Christine and all the family.
EASTER SUNDAY: There will be no choir rehearsals for Easter, as Dorothy is recovering from an operation, which was successful.
NUMBERS CLUB: The Numbers club Draw for January 2023 was as follows: 1st prize £50 number 12. 2nd prize £30 number 23. 3rd prize £20 number 7. 4th prize £15 number 18.

PAULINE’S FUNERAL: The funeral of Mrs Pauline Hill took place on
Tuesday, 28 February. Pauline was a
much-loved member of the Chapel and Rev Brenda Catherall officiated. The hymn “Chowbent Chapel “ was played as
Pauline was brought into the Chapel and the choir sang “There is a place I
call my own” to the tune “Flying Free” during the service. “To a Wild Rose” was played for a quiet
period to remember Pauline, who had as one of her many contributions to Chapel
life been responsible for putting flowers in Chapel. Susan Loudon provided a
beautiful flower arrangement, which included Pauline’s favourite flowers. As requested by Pauline’s family, a recording
of “Crazy” sung by Patsy Cline was played as she left the Chapel for the Crematorium,
accompanied only by Rev Brenda Catherall, as was her wish. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family
at this time.
This was truly a ‘Service of Thanksgiving’ and friends and
neighbours joined the family and the congregation in Chapel and in the
hall.
Sheila Darbey organised a splendid buffet in the hall after
the service and we are grateful to her and to the friends who helped to set
out, serve and clear up. A commemorative
bingo game was played with Sheila as caller and members of the bingo group
providing audible support.
BINGO: The bingo group meets
on Wednesdays. Lunch is provided at a
cost of £1.50 for members arriving at 11 am and bingo starts at 12.30. The session ends at 2.30pm and everyone is welcome.
FLOWERS: Thank
you to Muriel, who has been responsible for arranging the flowers while Lynne
has been away. Donations in memory of family or friends are very welcome.
ROBERT JAMES MATHER: We
were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Mather in hospital at the
age of 78. Our thoughts and prayers are very much with his wife Denise, sons
Steven, Craig and Simon and all the family. Bob attended Hindley Unitarian
Chapel as a youngster and it was at a UYPL weekend at Great Hucklow that he met
Chowbenter Denise Harter. They married at Chowbent in 1967. Both he and
Denise were active chapel members and Bob had served on the committee and
had also served as a trustee. Bob had a gentle nature and could light up a room
with his warm smile. He will be greatly missed. The funeral service will
take place at Chapel on Thursday March 9 at 1pm followed by
committal at Howe Bridge Crematorium..

PAULINE HILL: It was with great sadness that we learned of
the death of Pauline. She was a much
loved member of the Chapel and choir and will be sorely missed. Our sympathy and thoughts are with the
family.
BIRTHDAY WISHES: In January Marion
Fildes celebrated her 90th birthday.
Although not the oldest member, Marion is the longest serving member of
the Chapel, having seen 80 years of active service, organising social events,
fund-raising and singing in the choir.
We all wish Marion many happy returns of the day.
FLOWERS:
8 January – Birthday memories of Muriel Forest Williams
from her loving son, Duncan, and Christine.
8 January – Celebration of the
Diamond Wedding Anniversary (60 years) of Jean and Michael Tonge, who were
married at Chowbent Chapel on 5 January 1963. Rev Twinn officiated and the organist
was Mr Frank Glover. The day was marked
by heavy snowfall!
15 January – In loving memory of Mr & Mrs J A Vernon,
Patricia and Peter John, given by Dorothy Williamson
15 January – Birthday memories of Benjamin Franklin Leigh,
beloved husband of Margaret Leigh, devoted father to Susan and Barry and much
loved grandfather and great grandfather.

A happy new year to
all members and friends.
CHRISTMAS FAIR: The
Christmas Fair was very well attended. The raffle made just over £950 and the
Fair made in the region of £620, producing a combined figure of over
£1670. Congratulations to everyone who
contributed.
CAROL
SERVICE: As usual,
the choir played a major part in the service. We missed Pauline and Janet who
were still recovering from injuries and Marjorie and Mel who were unable to
come this year but for the first time for several years Brenda and Karen
provided the alto line in the choir items so we had harmony in Bach’s “Break Forth, O Beauteous, Heavenly Light” and Rutter’s
“Nativity Carol”. Vince McCully led the
service and The Holly and the Ivy and Good King Wenceslas were sung at his
request. Lynne Readett organised the
readings by members of the congregation and candles lit up the Chapel which was
decorated for Christmas by Linda and Mike Tattersall, Muriel Fildes and
Christine Worthington.
THINKING OF YOU if you have not been
well over the Christmas period. We hope
that John Hodson, Roy and Maureen Birchall and others who have not enjoyed good
health during the holiday will improve in the new year and be able to come to
Chapel again as the weather gets better.
Our best wishes to everyone.

MEDITATION ON ZOOM
You are warmly invited to Together in Meditation, a
new, national, weekly, online group for Unitarians and friends to
practice meditation together in a supportive
environment.
The
group is open to everyone, and we hope that those with no experience
of meditation can join alongside those with an established practice.
The group will be an open, loving, and inclusive space for us all to find
tranquillity and insight together. We aim to provide
basic instruction in simple and
well-established meditation methods and offer formal guided
practices in which to try them out, including around 20 minutes
of silence. At the end of the session, there will be a chance to stay for reflection
and mutual support as we deepen our
practice together. In keeping with the Unitarian ethos, the
session will not be orientated to any particular religious, spiritual, or
psychological system, though it will freely draw on the wisdom and methods of
many different traditions.
The
sessions will be facilitated by Rev. Sheena Gabriel and Rob Oulton who have
held weekly meditations for Godalming Unitarians for the past 13 years
alongside Richard Bober from The Meditational Fellowship and Lizzie
Kingston Harrison, Congregational Connections Lead. Please contact Lizzie
if you would like more information.

BRASS BAND CONCERT – 25
JUNE 2022: Tyldesley Brass Band came to entertain at the
Chapel on the 25th of
June at 7 pm. they treated us to a delightful mixture of traditional marches

would not be suited to a larger outdoor event." It was a lovely concert,
enjoyed by all who came from near and far.
ONGOING WORK: Many thanks to members, friends (and
husbands) who tidied up the gardens for the Tercentenary celebrations. For 300 years the Chapel and its grounds have

TERCENTENARY – SUNDAY, 12 JUNE 2022
The
12th of June showed what Chowbenters can do when they pull out the
stops. The service was led by Rev Brenda
Catherall (nee Glover) whose family have been Chowbenters for several
generations. Her theme was “Look unto
the rock from whence ye were hewn” and identified three rocks, the Rev James
Wood, who worked to get the Chapel built when the congregation had been ejected
from their previous building, the present Chapel as our place of worship and
Faith. John and Lynne Readett presented
a playlet written by the late Dennis Crompton.
It was read by John with Simon Blatchley in the role of Lord of the
Manor and David Heap from Dublin, an actor who is a descendant of Richard
Manley Peake, a former Chowbent organist of over 40 years. Manley Peake had no musical training but
wrote many hymn tunes, including “Chowbent Chapel” which the choir sang as an
introit. The choir also sang one of his
anthems “Still, still with Thee” and the vesper, which was “A Clare
Benediction” by John Rutter.
Trustee,
Joyce Snape, escorted the Mayor of Wigan Borough and her consort, who was
greeted by David Shallcross (Chairman of Trustees) and John Readett (Chairman
of the Congregation).
After
the service, a splendid buffet tea was served by Sheila Darbey and her team of
volunteers and a tree was planted in the grounds by the Mayor to celebrate the
Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. One of the
pupils from Chowbent School who accompanied their Headteacher presented the
Mayor with flowers. Susan Loudon had assisted in the choice of the tree and
doubled as the official photographer.
The
organist played eighteenth-century music in keeping with the building of the
Chapel and was able to ‘pull out the stops’ for the hymns to accompany the
choir and large congregation who enjoyed the opportunity to sing enthusiastically
after the restrictions imposed during the pandemic.
The service was a joyful
celebration of 300 years of worship and hope for the future.
FLOWERS for 12th June were donated by June Crowther and Ruth Jenkins, we thank June for the beautiful flower display.

BRASS BAND CONCERT – 25 JUNE 2022
There will be a concert by Tyldesley Brass Band in Chapel at 7 pm on Saturday, 25 June. Tickets can be bought at the door for £7 each. The cost to the Chapel is £350 so again we need a good attendance and hope to raise some money for the Restoration Fund.
Celebrated 300 years in our present Chapel and almost 400 years in the community on the 12th of June 2022. A service of thanksgiving was led by Reverend Brenda Catherall with a theme of Reverend James Wood and the historical past life of our wonderful Chapel.
Present were the Mayor of Wigan (Councillor Marie Morgan) and her Consort, Councillor Clive Morgan. Also in attendance were local councillors and the town's MP, Mr Chris Green.
Over a hundred friends of the Chapel boosted the congregation, and the Chapel was bedecked in Union flags as we were also celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
A playlet had been written by the late Dennis Crompton to re-enact the passage of time and history, through which the Reverend James Wood (The General) had led his congregation to successfully defend the Penwortham bridge and ford (near Preston) against a rebel Jacobite army. The playlet was delivered by John Readett, David Heap and Simon Blatchley.
The choir had worked hard to perfect the programme of songs and hymns selected by our musical director and organist Mrs Dorothy Williamson. The roof was raised with the fine hymns "Forward through the ages" and "Did those feet in ancient time", followed by R.M. Peake's "Still still with Thee" and "Chowbent Chapel"; Richard Manley Peake was the organist at the Chapel for over 40 years, They completed their programme with John Rutter's "A Clare Benediction". The postlude was “March” by Henry Purcell, arranged by C H Trevor and played with gusto by Dorothy on our magnificent pipe organ.
It was a wonderful event which stirred the soul and showed that the breath of life is strong in our Chapel; plus, having Brenda back in the pulpit reminded us all how much she is missed and what she gave to us as our Minister.
After the service, a magnificent buffet had been set out in the hall by Sheila Darbey and her "A-Team" for all to enjoy. Our photographer for the event was Alderman, Mrs Susan Loudon.
The Mayor was then asked to plant a tree to commemorate our Queen's Jubilee of 70 years on the throne. Pupils of Chowbent Primary School attended and presented the Mayor with flowers.
On behalf of myself, the Chapel Trustees, and Committee, we send our thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to the day.
David Shallcross, Chair of Trustees

It was a sad day when Bank Street Chapel held its final service on Saturday 14th May. There has been a chapel on the site for 326 years, the present building for 166 years, so the decision to close has been a very difficult and heart-breaking one, taken over almost 2 years of discussion.
We were joined for this special service by The Mayor of Bolton, and Consort, along with over 120 in the congregation (if only there could have been so many each Sunday morning….!!)
Although an emotional occasion, it was good to see friends from our local Unitarian Churches and Chapels and former members who had moved away but had travelled especially to be with us as we celebrated our past, of which they had been a part. We heard reflections from three of our former ministers, Rev. Tony McNeile, Rev. Brenda Catherall and Stephen Lingwood, who shared many memories. There was lots of laughter, and a few tears too! There were further reflections from Anne Mills, Alec Bowman, (Chapel Chairman), and June Grice, (Chapel President), who read a message from Rev. Sue Woolley President of G.A. who was unable to attend. I gave a reflection of Bank Street Women’s League, which has been in existence for 102 years. Sadly, due to the COVID pandemic, we had to cancel the planned celebrations for our W.L centenary in September 2020. The ladies of the W.L. will continue to meet for the foreseeable future. The U3A choir sang two lovely pieces, and Eleanor Hill, a member of our congregation, sang an amazing solo, unaccompanied. The hymn singing filled our beloved, beautiful Chapel, especially our final hymn, Jerusalem, which almost lifted the roof! A wonderful fitting finale.
Following the service, we enjoyed a finger buffet, whilst sharing memories, in the Chapel Hall, before closing the doors for the final time.
